Despite a common misconception, the selection of wedding hairstyles for cathedral veils is unlimited.

The veil shouldn’t dictate your choice of hairstyle, but vice versa. However, the correct veil placement is crucial.

For instance, if you prefer updos, you may secure the veil underneath the bun; and if you want a loose, wavy hairstyle, choose a veil worn over the head and covering the face.

Your hairstyle should complement your face and bridal gown. It shouldn’t be the star of the day but rather a finishing touch in your wedding look.

Still, some hairstyles look especially gorgeous with veils, as if they were made for weddings – Hollywood waves, fringe, low chignon, and braided crown, to name a few.

Natural Blowout

A natural blowout is one of the most versatile wedding hairstyles for medium and long hair, suitable for any hair type and bridal gown. Furthermore, it looks excellent with a cathedral veil.

A great DIY natural blowout starts even before you grab a dryer – in the shower. Use a smoothing mask and anti-frizz serum to achieve healthy-looking, bouncy hair.

Never dry your hair when it’s soaking wet. Wait until the hair is semi-dry, apply heat protection spray, and take a round brush and a dryer with a concentrator nozzle.

Note that the smaller the brush diameter, the curlier your hair will be. The result also depends on the length of your hair.

Dry your hair in sections, constantly rotating the brush and pointing the nozzle downward to close the hair cuticles. Use a strong-hold spray to finish the styling, but remember that too little spray is better than too much.

Low Updos

A low updo is an excellent DIY wedding hairstyle for a cathedral veil if you plan to secure it using a decorative hair comb attached above the bun. Choose a crystal, pearl, or otherwise embellished comb that fits your attire.

The easiest version of low updo is a classic chignon. This elegant, sleek hairstyle may appear intricate, but that’s until you try to make it.

Smooth, straight hair is a must for a beautiful chignon. Start by applying anti-frizz serum ad brushing your hair carefully. Then, make a neat low ponytail without flyaway hair or frizz.

Grab the ponytail near the end and twist it, forming a loop. The hair ends should be pointing towards the crown of the head.

Secure the loop using bobby pins. Then, wrap the loose hair ends around the elastic to conceal it and pin them in place or tuck them underneath the loop. Use a strong-hold spray to finish the styling.

Hairstyles with a Fringe

Brides with a fringe are lucky because the fringe draws attention to the face and thus is ideal for a wedding look with a cathedral veil.

Fringe always looks extremely modern with a veil, regardless of the hairstyle. For instance, you may leave the hair loose and make a natural blowout, romantic fishtail braid, or classy low chignon.

Of course, making a fringe only for the sake of looking good in a veil isn’t worth it. But if you already have it, don’t stress about the hairstyle – you’ll look gorgeous either way.

High Curly Ponytail

Ponytails are underestimated as a wedding hairstyle because many brides consider them too casual. However, a high curly ponytail is a stylish, comfortable, and DIY-friendly wedding hairstyle for a modern bride.

This hairstyle is all about volume. You may dry your hair upside down, use special volume sprays before styling, tease the hair, or apply talc powder on the roots after drying, depending on your hair type.

If you have naturally straight hair, curl it using a flat iron or curling wand. Don’t forget to apply heat protection spray to prevent damaging the hair, and spritz with strong-hold spray afterward.

Then, make a high ponytail and tie it with an elastic. You may leave strands near the face loose for a romantic look. Conceal the elastic by wrapping a strand of your hair around it and securing it with bobby pins.

You may attach the veil underneath or above the elastic with a decorative comb or bobby pins.

Half-Up, Half-Down Hairstyles

Half-up, half-down wedding hairstyles are perfect for veils because they beautifully frame the face while preventing the front strands from flying around.

Most importantly, the ponytail, braid, or bun at the back serves as an ideal attachment point for the veil.

Half-up, half-down hairstyles work equally well on straight and wavy hair. However, as with any loose hairstyle, you want your hair to look healthy and shiny.

A moisturizing mask, anti-frizz serum, and liquid silk will help you achieve it.

Dry your hair upside down, use a special volume spray, or tease the hair at the roots for added crown volume. Then, take strands from the front of the head and make a small ponytail, fishtail braid, or bun at the back.

Alternatively, you may create an intricate double waterfall braid on wavy hair for a romantic look or two small buns on the sides if you fancy something playful and fun. Optionally, leave the front strands loose to frame the face.

Tight Voluminous Curls

Many women imagine a sleek, classy chignon or romantic waves when they hear about a wedding hairstyle for a cathedral veil. However, fun, voluminous hairstyles like tight afro-style curls look equally gorgeous with veils.

The only way to achieve tight curls if you have naturally straight hair is by using a small-diameter curling wand. Start by drying your hair upside down for extra root volume.

Then, apply heat protection spray generously and curl the hair in very small sections, up to a quarter-inch wide. You’ll need to spend at least two hours curling all the hair. Finish with a strong-hold spray.

If you have wavy hair, use heatless curling methods that don’t damage the hair. Furthermore, heatless curls can be done overnight and don’t require you to spend any time in the morning.

You may sleep with a dozen of tight braids, multiple buns, or use foam rollers. Note that the smaller the roller diameter, the tighter your curls will be.

Braided Crown

A braided crown is one of the most beautiful weddings updos for a cathedral veil. Despite the detailed look, it’s a DIY-friendly hairstyle for brides with long hair and intermediate braiding skills.

Part your hair in the middle, ensuring the parting is as neat as possible. Brush out any tangles and spritz the hair with anti-frizz spray.

Start making a Dutch or reverse French braid from the nape of your neck from one side, crossing the strands underneath one another rather than over one another as with a regular French braid.

Work your way around the head until you reach the end of your hair, then tie the braid with a clear elastic. Move on to the second hair part, but start with the forehead rather than the nape of the neck.

When you have two long braids, form a crown by wrapping them around the top of your head and securing them with bobby pins. Use a strong-hold spray to keep the braids in place.

This hairstyle looks breathtakingly beautiful with fresh or faux blooms inserted in the braid. Secure the veil at the nape of the neck using bobby pins.

Pixie Cut

Brides with a pixie cut don’t have a particularly wide hairstyle section, but it doesn’t matter because this haircut always looks chic with a veil.

If you have a pixie cut with bangs, sweep them to the side or top using a strong-hold hair gel and a narrow-tooth comb. Alternatively, you may use your fingers for a more natural effect.

Consider adding some volume and texture by using a texturizing mousse or talc powder. Dry your hair pointing the concentrator nozzle upwards, and use your fingers to create an intentionally messy look.

Curling short hair may be tricky, but tight curls look so chic and playful on a pixie cut. On the other hand, if you prefer a sleek look, straighten your bangs using a flat iron and spritz with a shine spray.

High Bun

A high bun is an excellent DIY wedding hairstyle idea for brides with little to no hairstyling skills. Even if you’ve never attempted curling your hair or braiding, chances are, you know how to make a bun.

However, a few hairstyling tips are never excessive. Dry your hair upside down and tease it at the roots to add more crown volume to your bun.

If you have very fine hair, use a foam bun maker or curl your hair to make the bun appear bigger. A large satin bow or a sophisticated hair comb can add a modern touch to this otherwise casual hairstyle.

Hollywood Waves

Side-swept hairstyles always look stylish with veils, especially when it comes to classic Hollywood waves. You’ll need a flat iron and a wide-tooth comb for DIY Hollywood waves.

Before you begin styling, ensure your hair is shiny and smooth. Apply heat protection spray to prevent damaging the hair. Then, start to curl the hair in about half-inch strands.

The trick is to curl each strand in the same direction and brush it gently with the comb for a softer look. Be careful not to ruin the curl. Secure the waves with a strong-hold spray.
